Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson (June 1st 1926 – August 4th 1962) was an American actress, singer, and model and remains to this day an American Icon.
Perhaps as well know for her blonde bombshells roles as she is for her offscreen romances, addictions, and untimely death. She was one of (if not the) most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of America’s sexual revolution. For a decade she was a top-billed actress, with her films grossing $200 million by the time of her death in 1962. Long after her death, Monroe remains a major icon of pop culture. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her sixth on their list of the greatest female screen legends from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Throughout her short life she unfortunately struggled with addiction and mood disorders. Her marriages to retired baseball star Joe DiMaggio and to playwright Arthur Miller were highly publicised yet nether offered her the comfort and stability she perhaps craved, with both ending in divorce.
She died at the tender age of 36 from an overdose of barbiturates at her Los Angeles home. Her death was ruled a probable suicide yet rumours to this day still persist, as in life her death could not escape public fascination and scrutiny. One of Hollywoods brightest stars, she burned too fast and was gone too soon.
